Kitty's Story Page - Bonfire Night - (header)

"Remember, remember the 5th of November" sang Lemmy. Sam and the gang were having a bonfire party with real fireworks and Lemmy was excited because he had never been to a bonfire party before.

As usual Jeremy the giraffe was in charge and he had a list of jobs to do. "We have to make sure that we follow the Firework Code" he announced to everyone

"What's a Firework Code?" asked Lemmy.

"It's a check list that tells us how to look after the fireworks and bonfire to make sure that no-one gets hurt"

"Can I buy the fireworks?" asked Sam.

"You can come with me and help choose them, but children are not allowed to buy fireworks" explained Jeremy.

In the shop they chose curvy Catherine wheels, sizzling sparklers, fizzy fountains, radiant roman candles and red rockets.

Meanwhile back at the house, Bella Kitty & Lemmy were making a guy. Bella had found some old clothes and Kitty had tied the ends of the shirt and trousers so that Lemmy could stuff them with paper and straw.

"It looks like a scarecrow" said Kitty.

"What about the face?" asked Lemmy

"We need a mask for him" said Bella

"I'll make one" said Kitty

Jeremy and a very excited Sam came back from the shops.

"Look everyone!" shouted Sam as he took a big red rocket out of the box

"STOP RIGHT THERE!" exclaimed Bella. "Fireworks are dangerous. Children should NEVER touch them!"

"That's right," said Jeremy, 'Well done Bella for reminding us"

Jeremy put the fireworks on the shelf and went to set a rope around the bonfire. Later he moved the fireworks into a tin box with a lid on so they would be safe outside.

Kitty had finished the mask and Lemmy and Sam helped carry the Guy to the bonfire

Jeremy placed the Guy on the top of the bonfire and was just about to light it when Bella shouted "STOP RIGHT THERE!".

"What's the matter?" asked Jeremy.

"You have to check the bonfire first to make sure a hedgehog hasn't crawled underneath" explained Bella

"Well done Bella, you're right again" said Jeremy

Jeremy used a stick to check underneath the bonfire and then he very carefully lit it.

Everyone stood behind the rope and watched the Guy burn. Jeremy then lit the fireworks making sure he closed the lid of the tin tightly after each one was taken out.

"Ooh," said Lemmy "Look at the beautiful colours"

"You can have a sparkler" said Kitty to Sam, who then held out his hand.

"STOP RIGHT THERE!," exclaimed Bella "You haven't got a glove on"

"Well Done Bella," said Jeremy "You must always wear gloves if you are going to hold a sparkler, and remember not to wave it too near anyone"

Every one had a good time at the bonfire party.

On the way home Jeremy asked Bella how she knew so much about safety.

"I read the Firework Code when you went to the shops with Sam" she explained

"Well done Bella, you helped to keep everyone safe" said Jeremy

Fireworks are great fun to watch, but every year lots of young people get hurt in firework accidents

Make sure you're not one of them by following these tips to firework safety:-

1] Buy fireworks that meet BS 7114 from a shop you know, and keep them in a closed box

2] Follow the specific instructions on each firework

3] Never put fireworks in a pocket

4] NEVER play with fireworks, or throw them. They are explosive and can hurt you

5] ONLY adults should light or hold fireworks

6] When you are watching fireworks, STAND WELL BACK

7] NEVER go near a firework that has been lit. Even if it hasn't gone off, it could still explode

8] Fireworks will FRIGHTEN your pets, so keep them safely indoors

9] IF you are given a sparkler ALWAYS wear gloves and hold it at ARM'S LENGTH. When it goes out, DON'T TOUCH IT as it could still burn you. Put it tip down into a bucket of water. (Children under five should NEVER be given sparklers!!)
