It's Sam's birthday tomorrow, but whenever he tries to tell anyone, they change the subject...

"It's my birthday tomorrow," Sam told Bella.

"Is it? Oh, that's nice," said Bella, not stopping her dusting.

"It's my birthday tomorrow," he told Lemmy.

"Is it? Oh that's nice," said Lemmy, as he carried on building his Lego castle.

"It's my birthday tomorrow," he told Kitty.

"Is it? Oh that's nice," replied Kitty, busily sorting out her puzzles.

"It's my birthday tomorrow," Sam told Jeremy.

"Is it. Oh that's nice," said Jeremy who didn't even look up from reading his comic.

"Oh dear," thought Sam, "no one seems to care about my birthday."

He felt very sad and went out into the garden for a walk.

Meanwhile, in the kitchen, all of Sam's friends were busy making him a surprise birthday cake.

Kitty giggled as she stirred the chocolate mixture. "What a surprise Sam will have tomorrow," she said.

"There's something missing," said Bella.

"I know," said Jeremy, "we need some candles."

"Yes, and I know where some matches are," said Lemmy, who rushed to get the matches from the high shelf.

"STOP!" shouted Jeremy. "You mustn't touch the matches. They could brun you. I'll get them down, but not today. I'll get them down tomorrow on Sam's birthday. Then I will carefully light the candles for Sam to blow out."

The next morning Sam woke up very early to find that everyone had remembered his birthday after all.

There were presents and cards, but best of all a wonderful chocolate birthday cake.

"Happy Birthday'" sang everyone as Jeremy carefully lit the candles.

Sam took a big breath, made a wish and blew out the candles.

Jeremy put the matches safely back on the high shelf.
